Cabin Weekend 3

We made a great deal of progress this weekend. Habitat for Humanity has opened a store in Goleta (ReStore) that resells used construction materials (mostly windows, doors, and plumbing) and uses those proceeds to build more Habitat for Humanity houses. We got great deals on five windows and a heavy duty glass-pane door. By Sunday night we'd framed in everything, put up siding on one and a half walls, run electrical, and started on the rafters.

The Cabin, Weekend 2

The cabin is really coming along. Dad did some unauthorized improvements while I was away during the week; all for the better, it will now be a fancy proper housish-cabin with a toilet and sink. Saturday we got the subfloor finished and the east wall framed up. The east wall will be windowless, since it looks directly onto the hillside.

On Sunday we framed the remaining three walls, setting studs at 16". Window and door framings will be decided on once we find the windows and doors. We figured out a template for the rafters, and those are waiting to be cut next Saturday. The roof has a decent peak, over 4 feet above the sidewalls, so it should be enough room for a little loft at the north end.

Does anyone want to give me a bunch of double-hung windows and sliding French doors? Eh?

I'm helping build a cabin at my parent's place, with the wisdom and skills of my dad. (See him below driving a tractor overloaded with lumber down a 45-degree grade.) This was the first weekend of work; we cut a footpath up to the clearing, and leveled a soil foundation with a railroad tie perimeter.

TDS spent Sunday in a warehouse downtown shooting a video for "Emily Paints." Our friends Don Shelford and John Knecht are directing it. We have one more day of shooting this week and it should be edited within the next couple months.

The idea for the video was thought up in December, and involved heavy wool sweaters. It was miserably hot but we gave it our best effort.

It snowed in Jackson and made for a small crowd. Today we drove to Baton Rouge, saw Chris's folks place by a lake in Denham Springs, and did a radio show at LSU. Biggest football stadium I've ever seen.

It snowed coming across Oklahoma, right up to the edge of Little Rock. The highlight of LR: we played some live songs on a public folk station, upstairs in a rundown Victorian house, with the coolest dude in the world, "Red." Truly wonderful guy, funny and kind.

Nobody came to the Vino's show.

We played anyways and drove straight down along the West edge of the Mississippi, through Louisiana and across to Jackson.

We drove into OK City, Jesse bought a new drum rug and gave the old to the drum clerk at Guitar Center. Everyone incredibly nice but bemoaning the city... "Nothing to do, gotta get out of here, coming to California, there's no scene here..."

Norman: small, sleepy, freight trains rattling past the OU campus. Like Omaha and other sleepy towns, it had a great music shop, and the manager beat Jesse and I at foozball. (2 against 1, he won 10 to 4.) The shop decorated with handmade recreations of great album covers..

A truck slowed down, addressing Jesse, "C'mon man, are you wearing your sister's pants?"

The son of a woman who sold us gas last night came to our Oppolis set, brought his high school buddy, and told us about their plan to move to Santa Barbara. We gave them a ride home after the show, gave them numbers, told them to call when they make it West.

Since we're home from the road for awhile (forever, if we don't get a good tour soon...) I've decided to turn this into a blog about guitars and/or photography, whichever occurs on any given day.

In Canada I picked up a 1980s Japanese hollowbody, sort of a Gibson ES knockoff EXCEPT it is completely hollow instead of having a block running down the center. It sounds amazing, but it feeds back at anything above low volume. Apparently that is why Gibson made the first ES-335.

It plays great, has a rosewood neck and a Bigsby style bridge that somebody filled in with resin and a tiny metallic crest of a snake and the initials "WS". So far I've played it through three amps, and a little Princeton 12" sounded the best, turned up loud.

Trying it out in Detroit (before this show Jason nicknamed it "Kamikaze" for obvious reasons. He was on-point. I'm also wearing a hat.)

After my tuners exploded in Chicago I traded the cheap and awful Planet Waves tuner for another Boss TU-2. My last TU-2 exploded but at least it lasted a year.

I'm also thinking about a few other changes... namely swapping my 410 Deville for something like a 15" Deluxe or a 2x12" Dual Reverb, as well as finding a different overdrive pedal. Maybe the Ibanez Tube Screamer that everyone always talks about.

Experimenting is expensive!

I didn't have a chance to update this the last few days. We left Detroit and briefly got lost; during which time we saw the real bad parts of the city. It was sad. Big old brick homes overgrown with weeds, some condemned and falling down, battered old cars parked haphazardly.

We drove to Chicago, which was a much bigger city than I remember. The show was a nightmare. I broke a string on the opening song which led to one malfunction after another, the new tuner I'd bought to replace my broken TU-2 broke, guitars were falling out of tune left and right. It was bad. We sacrificed Mustachio to Chicago after the show and left him in the alley. It was sad but it was time.

We started driving immediately after the show and made it across the Mississippi to Iowa. Napped in a gas station parking lot and drove all the way across Nebraska and halfway through the Rockies. The mountains were snowy and lit up by a giant full moon, but the only weather we hit was a light rain. Stayed at a motel, then woke up and drove the remaining 900 miles to LA. Tour #1 complete.

The numbers: 5,964 miles driven. 5,700 miles flown. 14 performances. $0.00 made.

The cities (in order) where we played: Denver CO, Omaha NE, Rock Island IL, Indianapolis IN, Newport KY, New York NY, Los Angeles CA, New York again, Boston MA, Toronto ON, Detroit MI, Chicago IL.

The Toronto show went well, all things considered. One guy showed up who had bought our album off Emusic and "couldn't remember" where he heard about it. I thought that was pretty great. Maybe we're becoming sort of an airborne virus in the Canada air.

The Detroit show was out in Ferndale, which is about a mile from 8 Mile Road (of Eminem fame.) The venue was actually very nice and clean; the neighborhood seemed great, and we're staying in the supremely classy basement of a friend of Oh No! Oh My!'s. The horror stories about Detroit are probably true but we managed to escape the bad side of town this time.

All of our border crossings went swimmingly too. Both the Canadian and U.S. Customs folks asked "who's the lead singer?" and told us to "rock on." The Canadian customs lady even helped us fudge our paperwork so we wouldn't have to pay any taxes on our retail merch. Thanks Canadian Customs Lady.

Only one more show, in Chicago tomorrow night, and then we get to drive all the way home to L.A.

We left New York around noon today. I miss it. It was an exhausting and fun week and I learned more about New York than I ever thought I would... and I miss it. It's a dirty busy mess, and it's great.

CMJ is finally over. We made it to one of our scheduled three Friday shows, the Daytrotter.com show. It was at a place on 24th called The Red Door. The guy who runs the place was an early manager for the Stones; every year he repaints the door a different color and the place becomes The (name a color) door. White Door... Green Door...

The stage had buckets above it to catch runoff water from upstairs. Upstairs, incidentally, is the bathroom. Gross.

Also, I locked my camera in the Good Magazine apartment so the few NY photos I've been taking are with my crummy camera phone.

We went to the park and then the Met, where I revisted my favorite section from when I was in NY with my folks, medieval armor.

We're flying the new Virgin American back to LA for one show downtown. This airplane is nuts! It has discotheque lighting (purple and pink flourescent track lights) and 9 inch monitors in the back of every seat. You can chat via text with people in any seat, play video games, watch tv, make music playlists... Or go to sleep.

Tamaqua, Pennsylvannia is an old coal mining town where Jesse's dad grew up. We went to the old graveyard trying to find his grandparent's graves. It was pitch black and we wandered the plots with flashlights; we found some of his close relatives but no coal-mining Hoys. It was peaceful but scary; no moon; crows barking in the trees, surrounded by thick Pennsylvania woods and old, old coal miner's houses with a light on here and there.

Daytrotter, Rock Island, Old Man River

Last night we got to Rock Island Illinois, part of the Quad Cities (Rock Island, Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline). Downtown of Davenport and Rock Island are pretty much dead. Lots of boarded up windows, buildings for lease or for sale. We went to a show at the Redstone Room and saw A Sides, who did a Daytrotter session yesterday.

Daytrotter (daytrotter.com) was wonderful. Third floor of an old radio station; a tracking booth, an instrument room, and a sound room filled with vintage amps and cool keyboards, pedals, electric pianos. I played through a 15" Fender Deluxe. It sounded amazing. Thinking about swapping the Deville for a Deluxe.

The session went great, we played Ortolan, Animals, When it all went wrong, and This old home, all to 1/4" tape.

From Omaha to Iowa

The Slowdown where we played last night for 7 people. Jacob from the Faint (who we ran into in a store next door) came out. The venue was amazing. This morning we checked out their studio, also amazing, still the friendliest band/guys in the world. They're working on a new album.

Omaha is clean and beautiful, with a warehouse district that's being converted into lofts. It's also really really cold.

A nice kid directed us to some record stores, and we found our album at Drastic Plastic. Cool store. Josh bought the last one and gave it to the kid who'd given directions.

We keep seeing White Rabbits posters and they're playing the same venues we are (they must be heading West while we head East.) We left them a record at Larimer Lounge in Denver, and they're playing Slowdown this Friday. White Rabbits + us would be a good tour.

Faint stickers and albums are everywhere in Omaha. The Urban Outfitters had an entire section of CDs and vinyls devoted to Bright Eyes and The Faint. Pretty cool.

Hi, I'm Will. This is a blog. The point of this blog is to keep my friends and family informed (if they desire to be informed) about my whereabouts and undertakings. I'm in a band, we're about to go on tour for the first time, and I'm taking my laptop and my camera. It's that easy!

And so, we begin.

Yesterday we played the LA Weekly Detour Festival in downtown LA, and my guitar cables weren't long enough for the huge stage so they came unplugged twice. I found this photo on flickr; in it I'm running to plug my cable back in after the "Eucalyptus" drum part. I'm buying a 30 foot cable today.

And that's the end.

We're leaving on our first "real" tour on Monday morning, driving cross-country to play the CMJ festival in New York. If this goes like I plan it, I'll be posting lots of photos, brief updates, and wrenching your heart with true tales of triumph and failure.
